Veteran political figure and former Sadr-e-Riyasat of Jammu and Kashmir, Karan Singh, has publicly advocated for the urgent restoration of statehood to the Union territory. During a recent event in Srinagar, he asserted that the region’s populace should not be placed in a position where they have to plead with the central government for their rights.

The call for Jammu and Kashmir statehood remains a significant topic of discussion, particularly as the administration continues its long-term strategy for the region. Speaking on the sidelines of an Interfaith Dialogue hosted by the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL) and the Inter-Faith Harmony Foundation of India, Karan Singh emphasized that the commitment made by the government should be honored.

Advocating for Jammu and Kashmir Statehood

Karan Singh highlighted the historical significance of the region, noting that it was previously the largest state in India. Addressing the audience at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC), he remarked that the restoration of statehood is a matter of administrative obligation rather than something for which the people should have to beg. He noted that while the timing of this restoration rests with the central authorities, the expectation for its implementation remains high.

Beyond the political discourse, Karan Singh dedicated time to promoting social unity across the territory. He urged the residents of the two distinct regions—Jammu and Kashmir—to maintain strong, harmonious relations despite occasional tensions. He noted that a unified, stable state serves as a powerful representative for the entire nation, offering a positive path forward for the country at large.

The former Union minister also stressed the vital importance of communal harmony in a diverse nation. Reflecting on historical precedents, he cautioned that societal discord can have long-lasting negative impacts. By fostering an environment where individuals of all religious backgrounds engage in meaningful dialogue, he argued that the nation can better understand its diverse fabric and work collectively toward progress. The Interfaith Dialogue initiative serves as a crucial platform for these discussions, aiming to bridge gaps and build a stronger, more inclusive society through mutual understanding and respect. The event highlighted the necessity of keeping all communities united to ensure the continued development and peace of the region.
