BJP Leaders Clash Over Seating at Government Function in Pune

A public altercation regarding seating arrangements between BJP leaders has drawn attention to internal party dynamics during a recent government event. The incident involved BJP Rajya Sabha MP Medha Kulkarni and BJP MLA Abhimanyu Pawar, occurring at a function held in Pune. This political seating controversy unfolded during a ceremony organized by SARTHI, the Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Research, Training and Human Development Institute, which aimed to honor successful competitive examination candidates.

Medha Kulkarni expressed significant dissatisfaction after allegedly being told to vacate a front-row seat. She claimed that organizers suggested her presence might cause issues because the event was specifically focused on the Maratha community. According to Kulkarni, she was initially directed by officials to occupy a vacant front-row seat based on protocol, as other ministers had not yet arrived. She subsequently decided to leave the event, citing discomfort and disagreement with the reasoning provided by colleagues.

Details of the Political Seating Controversy

The dispute reportedly intensified when Abhimanyu Pawar allegedly suggested that Kulkarni refrain from sitting in the front row to avoid controversy, given the community-specific nature of the program. Kulkarni contested this, asserting that seating at official government functions must strictly adhere to protocol regardless of caste considerations. She emphasized that she has consistently encouraged constituents to prioritize a broader national identity over caste-based divisions.

Furthermore, Kulkarni alleged that Pawar attempted to prevent some of her supporters from entering the VIP lounge where Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was meeting visitors. She questioned Pawar's authority to dictate whom the Chief Minister interacts with, noting that the Chief Minister had been courteous during their meeting regarding local matters.

In his defense, Abhimanyu Pawar dismissed allegations that the incident was caste-motivated. He clarified that he was merely following seating arrangements designated for specific officials, including Narendra Patil, the chairman of the Anna Bhau Sathe Aarthik Vikas Mahamandal. Pawar expressed regret if his comments caused any offense to Kulkarni, whom he described as a senior colleague and an elder sister. He maintained that the incident was a misunderstanding and not reflective of personal or ideological hostility.

Following the exchange, Medha Kulkarni indicated that she would not pursue the matter further through formal complaints. She stated that she had chosen to move past the disagreement while expressing a hope that her colleague would reflect on the occurrence. The situation highlights the challenges of balancing official protocols with local political sensitivities at government-run events.
