In a thrilling battle for market share in India's electric vehicle (EV) segment, Tata Motors has emerged as the undisputed leader in March 2026. With robust service networks and a broad range of affordable EV models like Nexon EV, Punch EV, Curvv EV, Tiago EV, Tigor EV, and Harrier EV, Tata sold an impressive 9,494 units, cementing its position at the top.

Competitive Struggle: Mahindra and MG Motor Grapple for Second Position

The competitive landscape is becoming increasingly intense as both Mahindra & Mahindra and JSW MG Motor vie for that coveted second spot. In March, Mahindra & Mahindra took the lead with 5,218 units sold, driven by their new models like XEV 9S, XEV 9e, and BE6. JSW MG Motor followed closely with 5,113 sales for its popular Windsor EV in the mid-range market.

Despite a narrow margin between Mahindra and MG, the competition signifies that Indian car buyers are embracing new technologies and offerings keenly. It also underscores the importance of innovation and timely product launches in this rapidly growing segment.

Maruti Suzuki and VinFast have entered the fray with gusto. Maruti's e-Vitara marked its debut with 940 units sold, adding to existing confidence among middle-income buyers. VinFast, a Vietnamese giant, impressed by selling 688 units of its premium electric SUVs, VF6 and VF7. Additionally, their upcoming launch of the first electric seven-seater MPV, the VinFast VF MPV7, on April 15, 2026, could bring significant disruption.
