Indian Railways Set to Boost Speed with 220 km/h Trains
Indian Railways is preparing to launch 220 km/h high-speed trains after receiving approval for two new trainsets designed by BEML. The project includes track upgrades with composite sleepers and AI technology for improved security.

Highlights
- •Railways launching 220 km/h high-speed trains
- •New trainsets approved in March 2026, to hit tracks by March 2027
- •Two 16-coach trainsets with steel-bodied coaches to be produced
- •Track system upgrades with composite sleepers and AI for enhanced security
Indian Railways is taking a significant leap into the future of transportation by launching high-speed trains capable of reaching speeds of up to 220 km/h. This move aims to elevate travel experiences, providing faster and more efficient journeys across India.
The Ministry of Railways has sanctioned two new trainsets specifically designed for 220 km/h operation, surpassing the current Vande Bharat trains that run at 180 km/h. These new, 16-coach trainsets are scheduled to hit tracks by March 2027 after being approved in March 2026.
New Technology and Modern Infrastructure
Equipped with advanced features such as ultra-modern coaches made of steel bodies, these new trains promise a smooth travel experience. The project, which includes the production of two trainsets at a cost of Rs 866.87 crore, is currently being developed by BEML under contract from the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai.
To complement this technological advancement, Indian Railways also plans to upgrade track systems using lighter and more durable composite sleepers. These tracks will contribute significantly to enhancing travel quality, especially on bridges and crossings.
AI for Enhanced Security
In addition to boosting speed, the railways are integrating state-of-the-art technology like AI and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to monitor track conditions. This will help in identifying and addressing even the tiniest defects, ensuring optimal safety and reliability.
Along with new trains and infrastructure improvements, the Railways is producing Vande Bharat, Metro, Amrit Bharat, and other modern trains at several manufacturing hubs. Key facilities include the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala, and the Modern Coach Factory in Rae Bareli.
