Key Developments in Trade Relations
Goyal, during his recent three-day visit to Canada from May 25 to 27, underscored the impact of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's recent visit in February 2026. This visit has significantly revitalized bilateral relations between India and Canada.
"Mark J. Carney's visit to India a few months ago has completely transformed how we view our partnership. It has set the groundwork for this relationship, aligning new goals in mission mode," Goyal highlighted.
Goyal and Maninder Sidhu, Canada's International Trade Minister, stated that both nations aim to conclude CEPA by the end of 2026, with officials tasked to expedite negotiations. They also committed to tripling bilateral trade from the current $17 million to reach $50 million by 2030.
The Indian delegation, comprising 112 businesses, is set to play a pivotal role in this economic narrative. "We have arrived with one of the largest delegations, signaling our strong commitment to enhancing these relations," Goyal stated.
Goyal's discussions focused on further deepening cooperation across sectors like energy, agriculture-food, technology, and education. He expressed optimism that this development will unlock new growth opportunities for both countries.
"We are negotiating a free trade deal with India which is a game changer for Canadian workers and businesses – unlocking a massive new market." Carney highlighted during his post on X, reflecting the immense potential this agreement holds.
The efforts to finalize CEPA are part of broader strategic initiatives by both nations to boost economic cooperation. As negotiations progress rapidly, experts anticipate that these partnerships will drive economic growth and enhance mutual benefits for businesses from both countries.
