Hyderabad Residents Protest Destruction of Ammuguda Hillocks by Real Estate Activity

Residents living near the Ammuguda hillocks in Hyderabad have formally raised alarms regarding the ongoing destruction of local geological formations. The community reports that escalating real estate activity is resulting in the systematic blasting of rock formations, which locals argue is causing irreversible environmental damage to the region.

Concerns Over Real Estate Development and Rock Blasting

According to individuals residing in Lothkunta, Sainikpuri, and Yapral, the deployment of heavy earthmoving machinery has already begun clearing sections of the hills. The situation has become a point of contention, with the land currently entangled in legal disputes involving Cantonment authorities, defence estates, and various private developers. While some parties have reportedly managed to obtain favorable court orders, the local community remains deeply concerned about the permanent loss of these natural landmarks.

Manognya Reddy, a resident of Sainikpuri, emphasized that the protection of the rock formations should be prioritized regardless of who holds the legal title to the property. She noted that these unique granite landscapes, which are millions of years old, represent a natural heritage that is currently at risk due to aggressive real estate activity. The area is highly regarded by locals for its outdoor appeal, including popular trekking paths, dense scrubland, and distinct natural trails.

Ecological Impact on Local Wildlife

Beyond the aesthetic value, residents are highlighting the ecological significance of the Ammuguda hillocks. Pooswamy Jayaraman, a local from Yapral, pointed out that the terrain serves as an essential habitat for diverse wildlife, including peacocks, wild dogs, and foxes. The encroachment and subsequent destruction of these hills threaten to displace native fauna, prompting calls for government intervention to safeguard these natural spaces.

The situation has gained significant traction on social media, where citizens are expressing frustration over the rapid pace of development at the expense of the environment. Prof. Satya Laxman Dass, a geographical historian and long-time resident, expressed deep distress over the changes he has witnessed. He described the ongoing operations behind the Ammuguda railway station as an ecological catastrophe, noting that the destruction of the Deccan plateau rock formations is being executed with bulldozers and heavy machinery, fundamentally altering the landscape for future generations.
