Authorities in Hyderabad have launched a robust monsoon safety drive to manage urban infrastructure and traffic challenges during the upcoming rainy season. Recent high-level meetings involving the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate have finalized several strategic measures to ensure public safety and minimize flooding risks across the city.
Strategic Measures for Monsoon Preparedness
A primary focus of the monsoon safety drive involves strict enforcement of rainwater harvesting standards. Minister Ponnam Prabhakar confirmed that property owners failing to install mandatory rainwater harvesting pits will face penalties. According to guidelines from the HMWS&SB, these pits are required for structures on plots measuring 300 square yards and above, with strong recommendations in place for plots exceeding 200 square yards.
To address the frequent traffic congestion in the region, officials are planning to implement staggered office timings for IT companies during adverse weather conditions. Furthermore, there is a push to increase employee bus and shuttle services to reduce reliance on individual car travel. The Cyberabad police, under the leadership of Commissioner Dr. M. Ramesh, are collaborating with industry stakeholders to refine traffic management plans, ensuring timely communication and safer commuting experiences for all residents.
Infrastructure and Civic Coordination
Beyond traffic management, civic agencies are prioritizing the maintenance of essential infrastructure. The GHMC has directed officials to conduct daily visits to basti dawakhanas to oversee service delivery. Additionally, the minister has emphasized the urgent need to accelerate nala desilting and clearance projects, which are vital for maintaining the free flow of stormwater and preventing urban flooding during heavy downpours.
In the Cyberabad IT corridor, CMC commissioner G. Srijana is reviewing ongoing infrastructure projects. The administration has ordered officials to expedite pending works to alleviate inconvenience to commuters. These combined efforts aim to ensure a safer monsoon safety drive, fostering better coordination between civic bodies, traffic authorities, and private sector partners to handle the seasonal challenges efficiently.
