Hindu Community Protests Alleged Desecration of Lord Ram Statue in Bangladesh

Members of the Hindu community in Bangladesh held mass protests and torchlight processions in Dhaka following the alleged desecration of a Lord Ram statue. They have issued a 72-hour ultimatum for the arrest of those responsible and are planning nationwide demonstrations.

The Hindu community in Dhaka, Bangladesh, organized a significant torchlight procession on Friday to voice their strong opposition against the alleged desecration of a statue depicting Lord Ram. Participants expressed deep anguish over reports that a violent group had insulted the deity by placing a shoe on his statue at a construction site in Polash Bari, located within the Gaibandha district.

This protest against alleged disrespect highlighted the growing tensions surrounding the halted construction of a planned Ram temple, which was set to feature an 81-foot-tall statue of Lord Ram. Demonstrators gathered at the prominent Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka, with various organizations and university students joining the cause to demand swift action against the individuals responsible for the incident.

Demands for Justice and Community Mobilization

During the gathering, representatives from the community issued a firm 72-hour ultimatum to authorities. They declared that if the culprits behind the act are not apprehended within this timeframe, they intend to submit a formal memorandum to the Ministry of Religious Affairs this Sunday. The protesters emphasized their frustration regarding the current lack of arrests, despite a formal case having been filed following the incident at Polash Bari.

Beyond the immediate demand for legal accountability, the community has outlined broader plans for advocacy. This includes requesting a meeting with the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, alongside a series of rallies and public events. Some members of the community also voiced a resolve to continue their efforts to build Ram temples across all 64 districts of the country, framing this as a commitment to their faith.

The torchlight procession saw a massive turnout, moving from the Shahbagh intersection through the square and continuing toward the National Press Club via Moteshwar Bhaban. As they marched, participants vocalized their sentiments through chants of "Jai Shri Ram."

Widespread Protests Across Dhaka

The demonstrations on Friday were not isolated to the evening event. Earlier in the morning, two distinct programs were held in Dhaka by factions of an organization known as the Hindu Mahajot. One group held a human chain in front of the National Press Club, while another hosted a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters' Unity.

Furthermore, the National Committee for Puja Celebrations has announced a nationwide protest schedule for Saturday to maintain pressure on the authorities. These events collectively demonstrate the intensity of the reaction within the community to what they perceive as a grave affront to their religious sentiments, necessitating urgent attention from local and national administration officials to ensure the preservation of communal harmony.
