Authorities have issued a formal alert regarding the Himayatsagar reservoir as recent weather patterns have triggered a steady rise in water levels. Continuous rainfall within the catchment areas has resulted in increased inflows, prompting officials to warn various government departments, disaster management agencies, and local residents in downstream regions to remain vigilant.
As of 4 pm on Tuesday, the water level at the Himayatsagar reservoir was recorded at 1,761.15 feet. This measurement is nearing the Full Tank Level (FTL) of 1,763.50 feet. Currently, the reservoir is receiving inflows of 400 cusecs, all of which are being retained. The facility is presently holding 2.320 tmc ft of water, close to its total storage capacity of 2.521 tmc ft.
Status of Twin Reservoirs and Flood Preparedness
In contrast to the rising levels at Himayatsagar, the Osmansagar reservoir is not currently experiencing similar inflows. Water levels at Osmansagar are documented at 1,784.35 feet against its FTL of 1,790 feet, with the reservoir holding 2.412 tmc ft out of its 3.518 tmc ft capacity.
According to the HMWS&SB, the water level at the Himayatsagar reservoir has been climbing gradually since the early hours of Tuesday. Management has indicated that if environmental conditions continue to escalate, the release of floodwater from the reservoir may become a necessary emergency measure. Should such actions be required, officials have committed to providing prompt updates to both the media and the public through official channels.
HMWS&SB Managing Director Ashok Reddy confirmed that teams are maintaining a constant watch over the status of both water bodies. He has directed all associated departments to stay on high alert and ensure seamless coordination in their efforts.
