A tragic Govindpuri fire incident, which resulted in the loss of three lives, has led to the arrest of four individuals, including a minor girl. The incident, which occurred in a multi-storey residential building located in Tughlakabad Extension, southeast Delhi, was revealed by investigators to be a deliberate act of arson rather than an accident.
Understanding the Motive Behind the Arson
The investigation uncovered that the perpetrators sought to settle a financial dispute involving approximately Rs 80,000. The target of their scheme, a resident named Deepak who lived on the fifth floor, allegedly failed to return this sum despite persistent demands from the suspects. Driven by frustration, the accused hatched a plan to set a scooter on fire as a method to intimidate him.
On June 12 at approximately 2:20 am, the Govindpuri fire began when the scooter, parked on the building's ground floor, was ignited. The flames spread with alarming speed to other parked vehicles, eventually engulfing the entire structure. The victims were identified as Pankaj Pandey (28), his sister Sonia (20), and their maternal grandmother, Sushila Devi (70).
Evidence and Police Investigation
Local authorities were initially alerted to the emergency at 2:31 am, prompting a swift response from fire services and local law enforcement. While eight other residents sustained injuries and required urgent care at the AIIMS Trauma Centre and Safdarjung Hospital, police began analyzing surveillance footage. A critical breakthrough occurred when CCTV records captured a masked woman entering the premises shortly before the blaze began, confirming that the catastrophe was a pre-planned criminal act.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Hemant Tiwari, the identified 17-year-old girl disclosed the involvement of her co-conspirators during questioning. Niranjan (33) and his brother Rajkumar (27), both residents of Navjeevan Camp, were identified as the masterminds behind the scheme. Alongside the minor, police have officially taken Sarita, Niranjan, and Rajkumar into custody.
Legal proceedings have been significantly escalated following the discovery of intent. Initially investigated under charges related to negligence, the case now includes grave sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Charges include criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and mischief by fire. Law enforcement officials have confirmed that investigations are ongoing to ensure all involved parties face justice for this senseless tragedy that destroyed a family and traumatized an entire community.
