CBSE Websites Fends Off Major DoS Attack Amid Verification Process

Highlights

  • DoS Attack Thwarted
  • Multiple Bank Payment Gateways Supported Verification Process
  • Enhanced Security with Aadhaar-Based Verification
  • Technical Improvements Based on Student Feedback

New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) successfully repelled a significant denial-of-service (DoS) attack on its website, which was receiving over 3.8 million packets at one point, while also processing more than 56,000 applications for verification and re-evaluation.

"This afternoon, a substantial DoS attack aimed at disrupting our website services was successfully thwarted," CBSE informed the public on social media platforms.

Payment Gateways Support Seamless Verification Process

The CBSE has partnered with multiple banks, including the State Bank of India (SBI), Canara Bank, Bank of Baroda, and Indian Bank, to provide secure payment gateways for students. Payments can be made through various sources such as UPI, Internet banking, credit cards, and debit cards without requiring a separate account.

According to SBI, their gateway has processed over 40,000 transactions thus far. Indian Bank reported more than 5,000 successful payments, while Canara Bank shared that nearly 4,000 students had used their payment gateway. Bank of Baroda stated they have conducted over 7,500 successful payments.

CBSE Emphasizes Digital Security and Convenience, ensuring ease for students to make payments. The payment process is accessible via bank gateways without the need for a pre-existing account with the respective financial institutions.

The CBSE portal was launched later than initially expected, aiming at addressing student concerns over the on-screen marking (OSM) system, which has faced complaints related to technical glitches and payment failures. The verification and re-evaluation process allows students dissatisfied with their Class 12 board exam results to seek further assistance.

Key Improvements Implemented:

  • Aadhaar-based verification for enhanced security measures. For those without Aadhaar, parents' or guardians' details can be used.
  • Extension of session time limits based on student feedback to improve the user experience during the re-evaluation process.

Despite these efforts, malicious users attempted to sabotage services using cyberattacks. The CBSE has kept its technical teams vigilant to ensure a secure and reliable platform for students.

The portal remains operational till June 6, with all concerned advised to complete their verification or re-evaluation requests in time.
