  • The party emphasizes 12 years of development and welfare under the NDA.

The restoration of Jammu and Kashmir statehood remains a firm commitment of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), according to senior party leader Sunil Sharma. However, he emphasized that the timing for this transition will depend on the prevailing security environment and the central government's assessment of peace conditions on the ground.

Speaking at a press conference in Srinagar, Sunil Sharma, who serves as the Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, asserted that the promise will be honored. He clarified that the Union government seeks to ensure that violence, instability, and public disorder are effectively eliminated from the region's social and political landscape before moving forward with the process.

Political Dynamics and Regional Stability

During the interaction, Sunil Sharma turned his focus to the current administration led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. He alleged that the ruling coalition is struggling with internal contradictions and lacks the necessary unity to govern effectively. He went on to claim that the government might not complete its full term, suggesting it could collapse due to its own internal instabilities. He further remarked that the BJP has no intention of attempting to topple the administration or establishing an alternative government.

The BJP leader also criticized recent statements made by the Chief Minister, labeling them irresponsible. He referenced a meeting of National Conference (NC) legislators at Dachigam National Park as evidence of growing concerns regarding internal unity within the ruling party. According to Sunil Sharma, the NC leadership is preoccupied with maintaining power and privileges, often prioritizing political convenience over the public interest regarding Jammu and Kashmir statehood.

Development and Governance Since 2014

Highlighting the broader national context, Sunil Sharma stated that the past 12 years of the NDA government have been defined by transparency, infrastructure growth, and welfare initiatives. He pointed to significant progress in road, rail, and air connectivity, specifically noting the introduction of Vande Bharat trains to the region as a historic achievement. Furthermore, he emphasized the impact of central schemes such as Ayushman Bharat, Ujjwala Yojana, and the Jal Jeevan Mission on the daily lives of citizens in Jammu and Kashmir.

The leader concluded by noting that while the central government has created a more secure environment with fewer disruptions like stone-pelting, the responsibility for ensuring effective governance and employment generation now lies with the elected local government. He urged the administration to prioritize the timely execution of projects funded by the Centre to foster lasting progress and prosperity.
