The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit in Jammu and Kashmir announced on Thursday its intention to lodge a formal police complaint regarding Nazia Elahi Khan. The move comes following the circulation of controversial remarks attributed to the social media influencer concerning Prophet Muhammad. The party's decision aims to address the growing public concern surrounding these inflammatory comments.
The incident surfaced after a video clip from an Instagram podcast featuring Nazia Elahi Khan and host Divya Singh gained widespread attention online. Numerous Muslim organizations have publicly expressed their outrage, asserting that the statements made during the discussion were offensive to religious sentiments and posed a risk to communal peace. The impact of these remarks has triggered extensive discussions across social media platforms, leading to various calls for legal intervention.
Legal Proceedings and Institutional Clarifications
Currently, Nazia Elahi Khan is facing significant legal scrutiny in Maharashtra. Authorities confirmed that an First Information Report (FIR) has been filed at the Shanti Nagar Police Station in Bhiwandi. Furthermore, the Raza Academy has submitted a separate complaint at Mumbai's Pydhonie Police Station, demanding rigorous legal action. Police officials noted that a Zero FIR procedure has been initiated, with the case expected to be transferred to West Bengal, the jurisdiction where the alleged incident occurred.
In response to the controversy, Sajid Yousuf Shah, the BJP J&K co-media in-charge, issued a stern condemnation of the remarks, labeling them irresponsible and unacceptable. He emphasized that the party remains strictly dedicated to its core philosophy of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas. Sajid Yousuf Shah clarified that freedom of speech does not grant individuals the right to denigrate religious beliefs or wound the sentiments of the public.
The party has taken significant steps to distance itself from the influencer. Officials reiterated that Nazia Elahi Khan holds no association with the BJP or the BJP Minority Morcha. This clarification aligns with previous statements made by Jamal Siddiqui, the president of the BJP National Minority Morcha. The party’s local leadership in Srinagar is preparing to formally approach law enforcement to ensure that appropriate legal measures are pursued. Meanwhile, Nazia Elahi Khan has rejected the allegations, maintaining that the viral videos have been manipulated or produced using Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. She has also reported receiving threats in the wake of the ongoing controversy, which remains under active investigation.
