A special court for Prevention of Child Sexual Offences (POCSO) cases in Hyderabad recently handed down a harsh sentence, sentencing a 70-year-old man named Mohammed Zameeruddin to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment. The case originated from Chandrayangutta and ultimately led to the conviction under Sections 376(2)(f) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section three read with Section 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.

Details of the Crime

The incident occurred on May 11, 2023. The minor victim went to a local stationary and grocery store in Gulshan Iqbal Colony in Hyderabad when she was reportedly lured by Zameeruddin inside his shop. Inside, he subjected her to severe sexual assault, showed explicit material, and threatened her.

Distraught after the incident, the child shared what happened with an uncle, leading to a formal report filed by parents to local authorities on May 13, 2023.

Judicial Process

The special court conducted under SCPCS No. 53/2024 found the accused guilty and upheld the stringent punishment. The accused was additionally ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 5,000; failure to make the payment would result in an additional six months of simple imprisonment.

The successful prosecution came after meticulous investigation by the Investigations Officer P. Shiva Chandra (now an Inspector of Cybercrime) and effective efforts by Additional Public Prosecutors A. Ram Reddy and J. Rama Krishna.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar praised the investigative work, acknowledging that this significant conviction was a result of dedicated prosecution efforts in safeguarding children from any form of abuse.
