Varanasi's municipal authorities have proposed a strategic relocation of commercial meat and fish shops from within the city limits into designated zones on the outskirts. This decision is aimed at improving sanitation standards and better urban management by streamlining market operations.
An Urban Initiative for Better Sanitation
The Varanasi Municipal Corporation, led by Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari, deliberated during a meeting held recently at the Town Hall in Maidagin. After careful discussion and approval from various corporators, it has been decided to move butchers and fishmongers into five strategically selected outskirt locations.
These chosen areas include Ramnagar, Sujabad, Ganeshpur, Avleshpur, and Shivpur, all situated near the city's outer boundaries. Officials estimate that approximately 350 to 400 such retail outlets are currently operating within Varanasi and will be relocated in phases.
The move is expected to contribute significantly towards cleaner urban environments while addressing concerns of traders regarding their livelihoods, especially during religious observances like the month of Shravan when some meat shops are traditionally barred from operations.
Ashraf, a trader from Nathupur, shared his perspective acknowledging potential inconveniences such relocation might pose for both traders and consumers. However, he welcomed the move if practical solutions could be devised to ensure minimal disruption.
The Plan's Implementation Details
Initially, a phased implementation process has been outlined with land acquisition completed or underway at the selected sites. Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal reported that these locations have been carefully identified and approval processes are being expedited to facilitate smooth transition.
While traders expressed initial apprehensions, they emphasized on finding an inclusive solution considering their needs, as well as those of urban residents who benefit from nearby market facilities. The city officials assured that all necessary arrangements would be made to ensure minimal disruption during this significant transformation in Varanasi's commercial landscape.
