Tirupati district administration took a significant step towards enhancing road safety by distributing vital equipment to the police force on Wednesday. District collector Dr S. Venkateswar and superintendent of police L. Subba Rayudu handed out road safety gear and rapid drug testing kits at the Tirupati police parade grounds.
Safety helmets, vests, and additional visibility items were provided to mobile traffic officers, while officials demonstrated the use of the new drug testing devices on the spot. The district's 43 accident-prone black spots along national highways have already had safety measures installed at 20 locations, with work underway for the remaining sites.
Enhanced Preventative Measures
Awareness programs are being conducted in petrol bunks, and tractor owners are urged to install reflective stickers on their vehicles. Dr Venkateswar mentioned that about 15 lakh has been allocated towards road safety and drug control initiatives, with over 10,000 rapid ganja testing kits procured for distribution across police stations.
In addition, a special enforcement drive will target vehicle owners failing to install registration plates according to RTA norms. Heavy vehicles causing accidents due to improper parking are being monitored via night patrols by highway mobile teams. The SP emphasized the joint efforts of police, revenue, transport, and National Highways officials in improving road safety measures.
With 11 dedicated safety vehicles deployed at critical black spots for accident prevention, traffic regulation, and monitoring of stranded vehicles on highways, the district police are aiming to make Tirupati a ganja-free region. Over 4,500 kg of ganja has been destroyed last month, with more than 10,000 rapid testing kits introduced in various locations.
Between January and December of the past two years, 37 preventive detention cases have been registered against ganja offenders, red sanders smugglers, and rowdy-sheeters. The district police continue to mobilize resources and awareness efforts in partnership with the public to maintain a safer community for all residents.
