Tamil Nadu Assembly Session Begins as Governor Outlines Government Policy and Financial Reforms

The Tamil Nadu Assembly session commenced on Thursday with an orderly start as Governor RV Arlekar delivered his maiden address. During the session, the TVK-led administration reiterated its commitment to upholding established state policies, particularly regarding the two-language framework and the protection of state rights.

Policy Continuity and Financial Focus

The Tamil Nadu Assembly session highlighted the government's intention to maintain continuity while addressing urgent fiscal concerns. Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, leading the newly formed government, emphasized a firm stance on securing fair financial devolution from the central government. To pursue this, the administration plans to seek legal remedies through the Supreme Court, supported by a newly formed Special Legal Committee. A formal resolution will also be tabled in the house to demand the state's rightful share of tax revenue.

The address underscored significant economic challenges, with the Governor noting that the state debt has escalated to approximately Rs 10 lakh crore, representing 28.3 percent of the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP). The government has already issued a White Paper detailing this fiscal situation, which they attribute to mismanagement by the previous administration. To address revenue leakages, an additional privilege fee has been levied on liquor manufacturers, projected to generate up to Rs 1,000 crore annually.

Social Justice and Developmental Agenda

A key announcement during the Tamil Nadu Assembly proceedings was the government's plan to conduct a Social Justice Survey. This initiative is intended to ensure equitable representation for all communities. The administration intends to coordinate with the central government to finalize caste enumeration as part of the broader national census before proceeding with this state-level survey.

Beyond fiscal and social policies, Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has presented several long-standing infrastructure and welfare demands to the Union Government. These requests include the establishment of the Centre for Air Borne Systems (CABS) near Hosur, measures to halt the Mekedatu dam project on the Cauvery river, and the release of Tamil Nadu fishermen held by Sri Lanka. Furthermore, the state is seeking central assistance for the expansion of Metro Rail projects in Hosur, Coimbatore, and Madurai, alongside support for various highway developments. The government remains optimistic that these developmental priorities will receive favorable consideration from the central authorities, ensuring a robust framework for future growth and infrastructure advancement in the state.
