Shiv Sena (UBT) Convenes Emergency Meeting Amid Fears of Internal Rebellion
The Shiv Sena (UBT) has convened an urgent parliamentary meeting in Delhi to address a potential rebellion by dissident MPs. The outcome will decide the future unity of the party's parliamentary bloc as leadership moves to prevent a split and potential merger with rivals.

A high-stakes Shiv Sena (UBT) meeting in New Delhi is set to determine the future of the party and the political fate of its dissident members. Scheduled for Thursday, this crucial gathering follows a formal whip issued by the party leadership, which mandates that all lawmakers attend the meeting to discuss internal matters and address potential threats of fragmentation.
Political Crisis and the Future of Shiv Sena (UBT)
The urgency of the meeting stems from persistent speculation that a segment of rebel Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs intends to break away from the party to form a distinct group within the Lok Sabha. Reports suggest these individuals may be planning a subsequent merger with the Shiv Sena faction led by Eknath Shinde. The Uddhav Thackeray-led party is treating this development with extreme caution, utilizing the emergency parliamentary meeting to solidify its ranks and establish a clear position regarding the potential disqualification of any dissenting leaders.
Currently, the Shiv Sena (UBT) holds nine seats in the Lower House. To legally register as a separate bloc, at least two-thirds of the party's parliamentary strength would be required. While Anil Desai, Rajabhau Waje, and Arvind Sawant have reaffirmed their allegiance to the Thackeray camp, the loyalty of the remaining six MPs—Sanjay Patil, Sanjay Deshmukh, Omprakash Raje Nimbalkar, Bhausaheb Wakchaure, Nagesh Patil-Ashtikar, and Sanjay Jadhav—remains a subject of intense political debate. The party leadership maintains that without the requisite numbers, any attempt to form a breakaway faction will be constitutionally invalid.
High-Stakes Showdown in the Capital
In a preemptive measure, Arvind Sawant has formally requested that Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla refrain from granting any recognition to a breakaway group claiming to represent the party. Despite these efforts, sources indicate that a delegation of rebel leaders met informally with Speaker Birla on Wednesday, asserting that they hold the support of six out of the nine party MPs.
This situation marks a significant test for the Shiv Sena (UBT), which has already navigated a tumultuous period following the 2022 internal split. Party leader Sanjay Raut has publicly alleged that significant financial inducements, specifically mentioning a figure of Rs 50 crore, are being offered to lure party MPs. He has openly challenged the dissenters to resign their positions and face fresh elections, emphasizing that the party's electoral success was the result of the grassroots efforts of Uddhav Thackeray's dedicated workforce. As the party converges on its Parliament Complex office, the physical attendance of its members will serve as the final indicator of the party's current legislative integrity.
