Actor Sunil recently reflected on how director Sukumar's offer to play Mangalam Seenu in the blockbuster Pushpa: The Rise completely altered his career path. Speaking candidly, Sunil revealed that he had approached Sukumar during the lockdown period, expressing a desire to explore roles beyond comedy.

"I went to Sukumar and mentioned that I was eager for new challenges," explained the actor. "Within days of our initial meeting, he offered me the role that would change everything – Mangalam Seenu in Pushpa: The Rise."

The Role That Reshaped His Career

Sunil shared his surprise at Sukumar's trust and how the director instructed him to rely on body language for conveying emotions, a stark contrast from his earlier comedic roles. To prepare for this complex character, Sunil had to shave his head every day.

"This role was intense as I had never done anything like it before. Sukumar wanted me to be fully immersed in the part," said Sunil enthusiastically. The experience not only transformed him but also marked a significant milestone toward establishing himself as a versatile character actor across south Indian cinema.

The film's success opened numerous opportunities for Sunil, leading him into Malayalam films with Kaatalan, where he plays Maari. "This role was fulfilling," added the actor, noting that it set the stage for further exploration of varied characters in different language films.

“Since Pushpa, my life has been full of unexpected opportunities,” Sunil said with a chuckle, recalling his visit to Kerala where he suddenly received scene papers in Tamil. The actor continues to expand his presence and has worked alongside stars like Rajinikanth and Sivakarthikeyan, further cementing his status as a sought-after character actor.
