PMFBY: Government Launches World's Largest Crop Insurance Scheme for Indian Farmers
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana in West Bengal to protect farmers from natural calamity-related losses. The event also included the distribution of the 23rd PM-KISAN installment and the inauguration of significant railway and rural road infrastructure projects.

The federal administration has taken a significant step toward bolstering the security of the nation's agricultural sector with the introduction of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY). This initiative, widely recognized as one of the world's largest crop insurance programs, is designed to provide comprehensive protection to farmers against financial losses caused by unpredictable natural disasters. Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially rolled out this essential scheme in West Bengal, marking a pivotal moment for regional agricultural support.
Enhancing Farmer Security and Infrastructure
Government projections suggest that by the 2026-27 period, approximately 5 million farmers within West Bengal are expected to benefit from the PMFBY. This program aims to secure nearly 1.4 million hectares of farmland, with the total value of the insured crops estimated to exceed ₹28,140 crore. By subsidizing a significant portion of the premium costs, the government is ensuring that farmers can access robust insurance coverage at highly affordable rates, thereby reducing the financial burden on rural households.
In addition to these insurance measures, the government is focusing on a broader strategy to modernize rural productivity. During a major event held in the Hooghly district’s Tarakeswar region, the Prime Minister not only addressed agricultural stability but also inaugurated several critical infrastructure developments. Among these were significant railway projects, including the Sankrail-Santragachi Link Line valued at approximately ₹590 crore and the construction of a 300-bed railway hospital in Howrah.
Integrating Technology and Connectivity
To further modernize the agricultural landscape, several innovative programs have been introduced, including Agri Stack, the National Mission on Natural Farming, and the Pradhan Mantri Dhan Dhanya Krishi Yojana. These initiatives aim to seamlessly integrate advanced technology into farming practices, effectively lowering operational expenses while simultaneously enhancing crop yields. The commitment to rural connectivity was also underscored by the launch of 49 road projects under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY-III), covering over 315 kilometers to facilitate the efficient transportation of agricultural goods to competitive markets.
The event also marked the distribution of the 23rd installment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN). Through a Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism, ₹18,880 crore was successfully disbursed to the bank accounts of more than 9.44 million farmers nationwide. These combined efforts—ranging from direct financial assistance to large-scale infrastructure expansion—demonstrate a concerted push toward long-term rural empowerment and the overall modernization of the agricultural economy.
