New Delhi: As the pace of technological advancement accelerates, so do fraudulent activities that increasingly pose a threat. A recent scam has highlighted how farmers enrolled under the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme are not immune to such scams. In Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, Ashok Kumar, a farmer from Azad Nagar, was targeted when he received an APK file via WhatsApp.
How Scammers Bypassed Farmer's Trust
A fraudster contacted Ashok via WhatsApp, impersonating someone linked to the PM Kisan scheme. When Ashok downloaded the APK file as instructed, his phone's control was immediately seized by the scammer. Within brief moments, a total of ₹72,400 was withdrawn from three of Ashok's bank accounts.
"The moment he realized what had happened, he was completely shocked," explained Kirti, a family member of Ashok Kumar. "This incident serves as a wake-up call for all farmers enrolled in the PM Kisan scheme."
Protecting oneself from such online scams is crucial. Farmers and anyone associated with government schemes must be vigilant.
Steps to Avoid Online Scams
If you receive a link or file purportedly related to a government scheme, do not click on it without verifying its authenticity first. Always stay away from downloading attachments, especially from unknown sources. The official PM Kisan helpline number for assistance is 155261.
Another critical point: if you receive any message requesting e-KYC verification or other administrative tasks, always verify the legitimacy before taking action. Prefer visiting a CSC centre or completing these tasks using the app or official website, pmkisan.gov.in
This incident underscores the need for heightened awareness among farmers regarding online security measures," said a spokesperson from HeadlineDock.
