Pinarayi Vijayan and BJP Criticize Kerala Budget Proposals Amid Debt Concerns
Opposition leader Pinarayi Vijayan and the BJP have heavily criticized the new Kerala budget, citing a lack of welfare focus, excessive privatization, and a failure to provide a credible financial roadmap for the state's massive debt burden.

Highlights
- •Opposition leader Pinarayi Vijayan criticized the Kerala budget for being pro-privatization and lacking welfare focus.
- •The budget was accused of rebranding previous LDF initiatives and favoring private corporate interests over public development.

- •Lawmakers noted that specific election promises, such as the Indira Guarantees, remain absent from the financial plan.
In Thiruvanathapuram, the political landscape in Kerala intensified following the presentation of the state's latest budget. Pinarayi Vijayan, the Leader of the Opposition, launched a sharp critique of the financial plan presented by Chief Minister V. D. Satheeshan. The opposition leader argued that the current administration is merely rebranding initiatives originally established by the previous LDF government, rather than introducing innovative solutions for the state.
Concerns Over Economic Policy and Welfare
During a press briefing, Pinarayi Vijayan expressed significant concerns regarding the government's trajectory. He asserted that the budget displays a distinct bias toward privatization, which he believes undermines the essential social welfare framework that has historically driven Kerala’s development model. According to the opposition leader, the lack of a clear strategy for eradicating poverty is a critical failure. He emphasized that the administration has not outlined actionable steps to build upon the progress made in addressing extreme poverty, questioning the long-term impact of these fiscal policies.
The critique extended to specific sectors, including coastal development, fisheries, and logistics infrastructure. Pinarayi Vijayan pointed out that the current proposals appear to prioritize private interests over the public sector, aligning more closely with central policies that favor corporate expansion. Furthermore, he raised alarms regarding the abkari sector, alleging that the budget might facilitate large-scale production of low-strength alcohol by private companies. This, he argued, directly contradicts the former LDF government's efforts to encourage small-scale industries to utilize local agricultural produce, such as grains, for alcohol production.
Political Opposition and Fiscal Challenges
The opposition's skepticism was echoed by members of the BJP. State president Rajeev Chandrasekhar criticized the budget for being overly ambitious while lacking a practical roadmap for implementation and resource mobilization. He characterized the document as being filled with empty promises that fail to address how the government intends to fund its various welfare schemes and development projects.
Adding to the criticism, the BJP legislators highlighted the significant financial burden currently facing the state. With Kerala already dealing with a substantial debt load of Rs 5.07 lakh crore, concerns have been raised regarding the economic viability of the proposed measures. Furthermore, lawmakers pointed out that several commitments made during the assembly election campaign, specifically those linked to the Indira Guarantees promised by Rahul Gandhi, were not adequately addressed or reflected in the presented financial plan.
