Odisha Launches Rs 5,575-Crore Rural Employment Scheme Offering 125 Days Guaranteed Work

The Odisha government has officially greenlit a significant new rural employment initiative, the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin), popularly known as VB-G RAM G. This comprehensive scheme is designed to provide robust wage security to households living in rural regions throughout the state. Set to commence operations on July 1, the program received formal approval from the State Cabinet, marking a pivotal step in the administration’s strategy to bolster rural livelihoods and mitigate seasonal job instability.

Strengthening Rural Livelihoods Through Guaranteed Employment

Under this ambitious rural employment scheme, every qualifying family in rural areas will be entitled to at least 125 days of guaranteed paid work within a single financial year. This provision notably exceeds the coverage currently provided under the national rural job frameworks. Chief Secretary Anu Garg, while announcing the cabinet's decision, noted that the state would also pinpoint up to 60 specific days during critical agricultural phases—specifically throughout sowing and harvesting windows—to offer additional labor support when it is needed most.

The mission functions as a vital safety net for families facing income uncertainty during lean periods or times of rural distress. Beyond merely offering wages, the initiative is structured to foster sustainable growth by creating long-lasting community assets. The works planned under this program are diverse, focusing heavily on essential areas such as water conservation, the development of rural infrastructure, climate resilience, and disaster preparedness. By investing in these sectors, the government aims to increase agricultural productivity and strengthen the overall resilience of villages across Odisha.

Technology-Driven Planning and Community Participation

A distinctive element of the VB-G RAM G program is its focus on bottom-up development through the creation of technology-enabled, participatory Viksit Gram Panchayat Plans. These plans will be crafted directly at the village level, allowing local communities to identify their specific needs and priorities. This approach is intended to boost transparency, encourage widespread community involvement, and ensure that public investment is utilized with maximum efficiency.

For the 2025-26 financial year, the Odisha state government has committed a substantial budget of Rs 5,575 crore to implement this program. By prioritizing this massive allocation, the administration has demonstrated a firm commitment to grassroots economic development.
