The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will implement a cashless toll system across all 1,150 toll plazas nationwide from April 1, 2026. This move ensures smooth traffic flow and eliminates the need for physical cash at toll booths.
Shift to Digital Payments
The transformation aims to reduce congestion and enhance the travel experience by enabling payments through FASTag or using UPI (Unified Payment Interface) via QR code scanning. Previously, vehicles without a VALID FASTag were subject to fines more than double in cash, which now has been reduced.
This change is expected to bring greater transparency and efficiency in toll collection, significantly reducing wait times at toll plazas. With the rapid adoption of digital wallets, this transition will facilitate smoother travel experiences for commuters nationwide.
