Cashless Tolling Set for National Highways: FASTag and UPI Only

Highlights

  • Effective 1 April 2026, cash payments at toll plazas will be completely eliminated.
  • Toll fees can now only be paid using registered FASTag or by scanning a QR code with UPI.
  • Drivers without a valid FASTag are liable to pay up to 1.25 times the toll fee via UPI for bypassing lanes.
  • FASTag annual pass rates will increase from Rs 3,000 to Rs 3,075 in the upcoming financial year.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced significant changes to toll payments across national highways. Effective April 1, 2026, cash will no longer be accepted at any toll plaza lane. The transition towards a fully digital system aims to enhance traffic flow and ease congestion.

Drivers must use FASTag or UPI for payment; failing to do so incurs a penalty of up to 1.25 times the toll fee via UPI scanning. Previously, this fine was double the cash amount. This move towards electronic payments streamlines processes, reduces waiting times, and supports Digital India initiatives.

How the New System Works

At any given toll plaza, enter with a valid FASTag or be prepared to pay through UPI immediately after scanning a QR code. For vehicles without a FASTag, UPI is necessary as cash payments are phased out completely. The adoption of digital methods will ensure quicker transactions and minimize traffic disruptions.

In a move for convenience, the NHAI recently raised the price of the FASTag annual pass from Rs 3,000 to Rs 3,075. This increase benefits frequent travelers as it eliminates the need for regular recharges. More than 5.6 million private vehicle owners are already enrolled in this program, demonstrating its widespread adoption.

To avoid any issues during travel, ensure your FASTag is properly updated and top up with sufficient balance before embarking on a journey. Neglecting these steps can lead to delays due to possible blacklisting of your FASTag if KYC details are not current.
