In a powerful display of humanity overcoming communal boundaries, a Muslim woman panchayat member stepped forward to conduct the funeral rites for a Hindu man in Kasaragod. This act of compassion occurred after the family of the deceased, Narayanan (64), refused to claim his body following his battle with cancer. The story of this compassionate last rite has resonated deeply with the public, highlighting unity in a time of social division.

An Act of Compassion Beyond Religion

Narayanan, a daily wage laborer originally from Chigrupadavu in Manjeswaram, had been suffering from advanced-stage mouth cancer. About a month prior to his death, he was discovered in a frail and starving condition on the veranda of a local shop. Irfana Iqbal, an Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader and a member of the Kasaragod District Panchayat, was alerted to his plight by a local ward member. Recognizing the urgency of his medical condition, Irfana Iqbal worked alongside local officials, including the District Collector and the District Medical Officer, to secure him proper care.

Despite their efforts to provide treatment, Narayanan tragically passed away on Thursday at the Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital. When local authorities reached out to his relatives to collect the remains, they expressed an unwillingness to take responsibility. Consequently, the family authorized Irfana Iqbal to handle the arrangements. Demonstrating a selfless commitment to human dignity, Irfana Iqbal led the funeral proceedings, ensuring the final rites were performed according to Hindu traditions at a public crematorium in Uppala.

Humanity Above All

The images of Irfana Iqbal, dressed in a purdah, overseeing the compassionate last rite, were widely shared across digital platforms. Many have praised her actions, noting that she performed the duty as if she were the man’s own daughter. In a statement shared on social media, she emphasized that humanitarian values must take precedence over political or religious affiliations. She expressed a firm hope that she would continue to support vulnerable and abandoned elderly individuals within her community.

Furthermore, Irfana Iqbal clarified that her actions faced no opposition from within her community. It is a documented practice among local charitable foundations in the region to perform final rites for destitute individuals in accordance with their personal faiths. By ensuring Narayanan received a respectful farewell, she has provided a significant example of social harmony and empathy in Kerala.
