Heat waves can significantly impact professional tennis players, as demonstrated by Czech qualifier Jakub Mensik's experience at the French Open. Mensik, ranked 26th in the world, said it was "insane" to play under such extreme conditions on Wednesday with temperatures soaring above 30°C.
Mensik managed a five-set victory against Mariano Navone, but his ordeal ended abruptly after four hours and forty-one minutes when he collapsed from cramp. The teenager needed eight match points before hitting the winning shot from a forehand that sent him to the ground. His opponent approached Mensik afterward, only for him to collapse again on his back.
Dealing with the Heat
Mensik elaborated on how difficult it was to keep himself cool during play. "I was really pushing myself for more than four and a half hours, especially in front of the sun," he said. "Even with breaks, you don't have enough time; ball boys can't bring towels. During changeovers, I only had one minute to rest, and sitting down takes just 30 seconds by the end."
After collapsing during play, Mensik described his immediate struggles: 'During the last point, my emotions got the better of me, leading to a sudden collapse that left me overwhelmed. After resting in the locker room for half an hour, I felt much better and continue to recover,' he stated.
Looking ahead, Mensik will take on eighth seed Alex de Minaur next, who has already received a walkover due to his opponent's injury after only playing since Monday. "The conditions weren't as extreme today," said Mensik, highlighting the importance of proper heat management techniques in such situations."
