Guwahati: A tragic incident unfolded near the TM Kasom village in Ukhrul district, Manipur, where suspected militants ambushed a convoy on National Highway 202, killing one truck driver and injuring six women. The security forces intervened to escort the commercial trucks, leading to an exchange of gunfire.

The Incident: According to reports, around 6 km from Shangkai village, the convoy faced resistance as protesters had blocked the highway. Security personnel responded by firing tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. This action resulted in minor injuries to five women, who received immediate medical aid.

Ambush and Casualties:

Vice versa, suspected militants engaged security forces, inflicting fatal gunfire on a truck driver from West Bengal. The identity of the deceased remains undisclosed, but local authorities have expressed sorrow over his untimely demise.

Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh of Manipur condemned the brutal ambush stating it was an act targeting goods vehicles and endangering smooth supply channels in the state. He further warned that such actions were aimed at destabilizing ongoing initiatives to restore peace and order within the territory.

Previous Incidents:
The district remains under the shadow of recent unrest, including earlier incidents where two civilians were killed by suspected militants on April 18 near TM Kasom. This comes amidst continued tensions following the abduction of over 30 people, primarily members of the Kuki and Naga communities.
