IPL to Expand: Matches Set to Reach 95 as Plans for Two More Teams Emerge

Highlights

  • Indian Premier League aims for 95 matches instead of the current 74
  • Plans to expand teams to 12, currently limited by current schedules
  • Increased matches require a larger window, specifically avoiding monsoon season conflicts in southern India
  • Future Tours Programme (FTP) cycle will allow team and match number increases

Indian Premier League (IPL) is set for a revamp, with plans to increase its matches from the current 74 to an eventual total of 95. IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal has confirmed that this expansion will cater to growing spectators' demands and improve viewership.

Why More Matches?

The increased number of matches is directly linked to the tournament's need for a larger window. According to Dhumal, it's necessary to accommodate 94 matches within the existing schedule from mid-March to late May to avoid conflicts with the monsoon season in southern India.

"Broadcasters' interests are crucial for us, and extended match frequency isn't ideal. That's why we've decided on maintaining a steady 74 matches until more time slots can be secured," shared Dhumal, speaking with industry experts.

The decision reflects careful planning to maintain the tournament's appeal while balancing operational logistics.

Team Expansion Challenges

Moving forward, discussions on adding two new teams are ongoing. However, current touring programs and fixed windows have constrained flexibility until future revisions can be made available in the Future Tours Programme (FTP).

"Our focus now is to secure a larger window for 94 matches, which will eventually allow us to expand the number of participating teams by two more," stated Dhumal.

The increase would come into effect when the FTP cycle allows more time and resources.

Current Scenarios

Currently, 10 teams compete in the IPL. With no immediate changes possible due to existing scheduling constraints, organizers are eying potential slots that can accommodate both increased matches and perhaps two extra teams.

The key move is securing more time, which would allow a broader schedule spread over March-May for optimal broadcast and fan engagement.
