Ahmedabad: Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Rajat Patidar paid a poignant tribute after clinching their second Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy, dedicating the championship to the 11 fans who lost their lives in the tragic M Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede last year. The victory celebrations following RCB's first IPL title, won in June 2023, quickly turned into grief as the rush outside the stadium led to the fatality.
Painful Legacy of a Tragic Day
Patidar expressed his deep sorrow and regret by stating, 'Obviously, you feel bad. You lost your fans after winning the game. Not just the fans, they are the family members,' during a post-match press conference on Sunday night.
"It's tough to express my feelings, but I always want to dedicate this trophy to them," he continued, emphasizing the emotional weight of his words. The stampede not only changed the course of the team's immediate future, leading to a stadium closure for nearly eight months, but also affected their daily lives significantly.
The RCB players wore jersey No. 11 during every match as a mark of respect and honor, while the franchise collaborated with the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) to create permanent seats in recognition of the victims. Despite challenging circumstances, RCB capitalized on their home advantage, winning four out of five matches held at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.
The venue's reopening posed logistical challenges, including a missed playoff match and IPL 2026's final due to high stakeholder demands. Nonetheless, this victory underscores RCB's resilience and unwavering commitment to remembering the victims.
