Indian Railways has recently implemented a unique rule that allows passengers to claim a full refund without canceling their tickets if their train is delayed by over three hours.
According to the new regulations, passengers who have bought their tickets online and whose tickets are in an active state must file a TDR (Ticket Refund Demand) via the IRCTC website or app before the train departs. In case the ticket is booked online and the TDR is filed, the refund will be processed within 5 to 7 working days.
On the other hand, passengers who have paper tickets and board the train should surrender their tickets at the nearest Computerized Reservation Centre (CRNC) and file a refund form. The staff at the counter will verify the train delay and process the refund within the regulations.
It's important to note that passengers who have already boarded the train cannot claim a refund after the journey has commenced. The rule also applies to non-Boarded Ticket (NBT) cancellation fees for delays over three hours.
The key to this process is to ensure timely filing of the TDR to avoid any discrepancies and ensure a smooth refund process. Always keep your bank details updated and save the 'Reference Number' received after submitting the TDR to expedite the refund process.
This new rule comes into effect from the moment the train departs. Passengers are advised to stay informed about any potential delays through the official IRCTC app or website to help make informed decisions.
If the train is delayed by less than three hours, ordinary cancellation rules apply and a full refund will not be provided. The new policy aims to provide a more hassle-free refund process for passengers and alleviate travel disruptions caused by unexpected delays.
