Hyderabad: Questions surrounding the cybersecurity of a website connected to the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT-H) resurfaced after screenshots appeared online, suggesting potential hacking. Screenshots showing messages like "Hacked By OVERTHRASH1337" and references to Pakistan-based hacker groups were widely shared on social media, triggering speculation about the institute's digital security.
However, IIT-H officials confirmed there is no evidence of a breach at this stage. An in-house technical team has been investigating since last week, with no suspicious activity detected so far. The institute acknowledged ongoing updates and maintenance during the semester break, suggesting these activities are unrelated to any confirmed cyber incident.
Comprehensive Security Measures in Place
Towards maintaining its cybersecurity protocols, IIT-H stated that its websites are protected through established measures and remain under technical control. As a precautionary measure, additional reviews and examinations are being conducted to ensure there are no vulnerabilities left unaddressed.
While preliminary checks have not identified any suspicious activity, officials stressed the ongoing nature of their investigation. In a statement to Deccan Chronicle, an official said, "We found nothing suspicious so far. The team is still looking into it and will continue the checks."
The screenshots appearing online depicted what seemed like a defaced webpage with foreign flags and hacker messages, though their connection to a real security breach remains unclear.
IIT-H officials also highlighted: - The site's "Under Maintenance" status was not in response to any confirmed cyber incident. - Initial checks did not reveal signs of a security breach. - Continuous monitoring and reviews are being conducted to ensure the institute's digital assets remain secure.
