New Delhi: Amidst the ongoing geopolitical conflict in the Middle East, India is not immune to the ripple effects worldwide. The recent disruptions in imports and exports through the Strait of Hormuz have led to a shortage of LPG cylinders, causing panic among consumers who are rushing to book new supplies urgently.

However, this sudden rush has attracted opportunistic cyber fraudsters who are exploiting people's anxiety to carry out scams. In India, cases of online fraudulent activities under the guise of booking gas cylinders have surged significantly, with victims falling prey and losing both money and personal information.

Understanding the Scam Tactics: Protecting Yourself Online

Cyber fraudsters use a multitude of tactics to deceive unsuspecting users. They send messages on SMS, WhatsApp, or social media claiming there is a shortage, urging recipients to book cylinders immediately to avoid running out. These messages often lead to fake links designed to mimic legitimate sites; download malicious apps; or scan phishing QR codes.

Once the user clicks through these deceptive paths, they are prompted for their one-time passwords (OTPs), payment pins, or bank details. This sensitive information can then be stolen and misused by fraudsters, leading to monetary losses that can take months to recover from.

To stay vigilant against such scams, here are some guidelines:

  1. Never access or install unknown links or applications received through SMS or WhatsApp.
  2. Book your LPG cylinders exclusively through official platforms like myLPG.in and the Indane/APC/LPG apps.
  3. Avoid sharing personal information with anyone claiming to represent a gas provider; verify the legitimacy of any request by contacting the actual distributor directly.
  4. In case of financial fraud, immediately block the associated bank account and report the incident at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930.

Identifying fake websites is crucial. Always scrutinize the URL for HTTPS security and look out for spelling errors. Be wary if asked to provide critical information like OTPs, UPI PINs, or banking details, as these are often red flags in scams.
