The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is set to organize the next phase of Project Udvasana, a significant civic initiative dedicated to the systematic collection of old religious items. This upcoming drive is scheduled to take place this Saturday, between 8:30 am and 11:00 am. Residents looking to participate or seeking additional information regarding the initiative can direct their inquiries to [email protected].
Many households in Hyderabad frequently struggle with the proper disposal of sacred materials, such as aging deity photographs, damaged puja frames, and broken idols. Without a formal, established disposal system, these items are often left under trees, abandoned near temples, or discarded in public spaces, where they inadvertently contribute to the municipal waste stream.
Bridging Tradition with Responsible Waste Management
Project Udvasana successfully bridges the gap between traditional religious practices and modern, responsible waste management. The initiative provides a respectful solution for citizens who wish to dispose of sacred items in a dignified manner. At every designated collection center, the process begins with an Udvasana Puja, which serves to respectfully withdraw the divine presence from the objects. Following this, the materials undergo a scientific segregation process, ensuring that they are either reused, refurbished, or subjected to environmentally responsible recycling.
The program has already demonstrated its effectiveness through two previous collection drives. These earlier efforts recorded a combined 163 individual drop-offs, comprising 100 items in the first event and 63 in the second. In total, approximately 500 kilograms of worshipped sacred materials have been successfully gathered for dignified processing and environmentally sound disposal.
Designated Collection Centers Across Hyderabad
The GHMC has established several convenient collection points to facilitate community participation in Project Udvasana. Citizens may drop off their items at the following locations:
In the Charminar zone, the collection point is the Bhu Lakshmi Mandir. The Secunderabad zone will accept items at the Shiva Anjaneya Swamy Temple. For residents in the Rajendranagar zone, the Sri Venkateshwara Temple and Hari Hari Kshetram are the designated sites. Those in the Shamshabad zone may visit the Sri Dharm Sai Mandir. Additionally, the Khairatabad zone features the Sri Sri Sri Mahankali Pochamma Devalayam, while the Golconda area provides access through the Sri Vishwanjaneya Bhaktha Samajam Temple Trust. Through these efforts, the city continues to promote cleanliness while honoring cultural sentiments.
