The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a high-level red alert for Delhi following forecasts of severe weather conditions, including intense dust storms and powerful winds reaching speeds up to 92 kmph. This weather shift has prompted significant concern across the national capital region, as residents brace for potential disruptions caused by thunderstorms and lightning strikes.
Delhi Weather Update: High Winds and Rain Forecasted
On Monday morning, residents in various parts of the city experienced light rainfall, providing a brief respite from the sweltering heat. Data from meteorological observatories indicates that Palam recorded 1.3 mm of precipitation, while Ayanagar received 0.6 mm. Other areas, including Lodhi Road, reported only trace amounts of rain. Despite these showers, minimum temperatures across several neighborhoods in Delhi remained notably higher than typical seasonal averages.
The IMD primary weather station at Safdarjung officially logged a minimum temperature of 28.2 degrees Celsius, which is 0.7 notches above the expected norm for this time of year. Meanwhile, other stations reported slightly cooler readings, with Palam at 25.4 degrees Celsius, Lodhi Road at 26 degrees Celsius, the Ridge station at 25.5 degrees Celsius, and Ayanagar reaching 26.6 degrees Celsius.
Impact of Severe Weather and Air Quality Concerns
Authorities have advised citizens to remain vigilant as a Delhi dust storm and moderate-to-heavy thunderstorms, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds ranging between 60 to 80 kmph, are expected throughout the day. These weather patterns are anticipated to affect multiple zones, including Southeast Delhi, East Delhi, Central Delhi, Northeast Delhi, South Delhi, Southwest Delhi, West Delhi, Northwest Delhi, North Delhi, and Shahdara.
The IMD expects maximum temperatures to hover around 39 degrees Celsius. In addition to the turbulent weather, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported that the city's air quality was in the 'moderate' category during the morning, with an average Air Quality Index (AQI) of 135. According to the CPCB scale, this level falls within the moderate range (101-200), suggesting that while air quality is generally acceptable, it may pose a minor health risk to extremely sensitive individuals. Residents are encouraged to monitor local weather updates closely as the situation develops throughout the region.
