The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued urgent weather updates regarding significant atmospheric changes across the nation. A massive system is bringing heavy rainfall and active thunderstorms to more than 15 states, offering a temporary reprieve from recent heatwaves. Residents in Delhi-NCR experienced pleasant conditions earlier this week following localized showers and gusty winds, signaling a broader shift in regional climate patterns.
Monsoon Expansion and Rainfall Forecasts
According to the latest meteorological bulletin released on June 15, 2026, the southwest monsoon has successfully advanced into remaining parts of Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. The moisture-laden winds have also pushed further into specific regions of Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Bihar. This progression is expected to stabilize weather patterns in these areas, though authorities remain vigilant regarding the intensity of the upcoming precipitation.
A comprehensive alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for the next 6-7 days. Targeted regions include Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, and the sub-Himalayan parts of West Bengal. In the north, Jammu and Kashmir-Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are slated to receive widespread rainfall between June 15 and June 21, with peak activity anticipated in Jammu and Kashmir from June 18 to June 21.
Impact Across Diverse Regions
While many states brace for wet weather, some areas face contrasting conditions. The IMD has cautioned that certain pockets of Telangana and Vidarbha might still encounter heatwave conditions over the next 48 to 72 hours. Conversely, states including Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh are forecasted to witness frequent thundershowers and dusty conditions during the week of June 15-21.
Furthermore, residents in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Konkan and Goa, Central Maharashtra, and Marathwada should prepare for scattered rain events throughout this period. The IMD specifically noted that strong winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 km per hour could impact Bihar around June 16, accompanied by potential lightning strikes. Authorities advise citizens in these high-alert zones to monitor local forecasts closely, as the combination of heavy rain and thunderstorm activity may disrupt daily travel and local infrastructure.
