  • Exemption for Senior Citizens Relying Solely on Pensions
  • Salaried Individuals Must Pay as Required
  • Taxpayers in Specific Situations Need to Pay Advance Taxes

The critical deadline for submitting the fourth installment of advance tax for the financial year 2025-26 is just around the corner, March 15, 2026. Failure to pay by this date can lead to additional interest and penalties imposed by the Income Tax Department.

Even in situations where individuals have filed an Income Tax Return (ITR), they may still need to make advance tax payments. For taxpayers whose total income tax liability exceeds Rs 10,000 after considering deductions like TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) and other credits, the obligation to pay advanced taxes remains.

However, senior citizens who rely solely on pension or interest income are exempt from this requirement. The advance tax payment schedule for the financial year 2025-26 is defined as follows: payments of 15%, 45%, 75%, and finally 100% must be made by June, September, December, and March, respectively.

If an individual fails to make timely advance tax payments, the Income Tax Department can charge interest under specific sections. Experts have advised that any additional income accumulated in mid-year should be included in the following installment unless there are valid reasons not to do so.

For taxpayers who work for a living, it's crucial to remain vigilant about their taxable income, taking into account profits from investments, dividends on stocks or cryptocurrency, and any supplementary earnings.
