Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is actively promoting waste-to-energy projects as a cornerstone of the state's environmental strategy. During a recent review of the Swarna Andhra–Swachh Andhra programme, the Chief Minister underscored that moving toward a circular economy is essential for improving public hygiene and controlling urban pollution.
The state government has identified sustainable development as a primary focus. To this end, officials have been instructed to prioritize the transition to Net Zero operations across various government facilities, including schools, hostels, and Anganwadi centers. As part of this broader environmental initiative, the government is replacing traditional cooking methods with induction stoves to simultaneously cut fuel costs and reduce harmful emissions.
Expanding Waste-to-Energy Projects and Green Initiatives
Regarding the advancement of waste-to-energy projects, Naidu reviewed the current operational status of facilities in Visakhapatnam and Guntur. The administration is moving quickly to scale this infrastructure, with plans to lay foundation stones for new plants in Kadapa and Kurnool districts. Furthermore, similar projects are currently moving through various stages of implementation in cities such as Tirupati, Nellore, Kakinada, and Vijayawada.
Beyond energy production, the government is also enhancing urban sanitation through the deployment of specialized machinery. Officials have been mandated to ensure that e-autos, mechanised sweeping machines, and waste compactors are fully operational in urban centers by the end of October. These efforts are complemented by plans to boost rooftop gardening initiatives and increase the efficiency of Gobardhan plants.
The administration is also tackling legacy waste management issues. With the approval of 33 new sewage treatment plants (STPs) already underway and 148 additional units planned, the state is making a concerted effort to modernize its wastewater treatment infrastructure. Naidu has directed officials to ensure that these facilities are commissioned between August and October, emphasizing that the completion of essential projects like the Magic Drain initiative must remain on schedule.
By integrating these technologies into the state's infrastructure, the government aims to establish a cleaner, more sustainable future for Andhra Pradesh. The consistent focus on these green initiatives reflects the broader vision of achieving long-term ecological balance while maintaining efficient public service delivery across the region.
