During the observance of Muharram in Hyderabad, a significant cultural and religious tradition was upheld as a descendant of the Asaf Jahi dynasty participated in a historic procession. Raunaq Yar Khan was formally honored during the tenth day of Muharram, marking a moment of deep reverence for the history of the region and the memory of the martyrs of Karbala.

Maintaining the Legacy of the Muharram Procession

The event took place at Ali Lodge, a notable site that holds the unique distinction of being the only private residential estate included in the traditional Muharram procession route. For the second time, Raunaq Yar Khan performed the ceremonial act of offering the “Dhatti,” a sacred tribute, to the Bibi Ka Alam. This revered artifact, central to the mourning rituals, is traditionally mounted on an elephant and carried through the streets of the city in a solemn display of faith.

The procession itself, which commemorates the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain, is a deeply ingrained custom in Hyderabad. It navigates through 27 designated locations and select religious shrines. The inclusion of Ali Lodge in this route has been an uninterrupted annual practice for the past 76 years, underscoring the enduring connection between the site and the historical traditions of the region.

Historical Significance and Cultural Respect

The roots of this tradition stretch back to the era when the Alam was originally established at Golconda Fort by the Qutb Shahi rulers. It was later moved to Bibi ka Alawa near Charminar under the governance of the Asaf Jahi rulers. The reverence surrounding the event is rooted in the legacy of Bibi Fatima-tuz-Zehra, the daughter of the Prophet and the wife of Hazrat Ali, who is central to the lineage of the Imams Hassan and Hussain.

According to Siraj’unissa Begum, a descendant of the seventh Nizam’s family and a relative of the lodge's owner, Syed Abid Hussain, the continued inclusion of Ali Lodge in the procession reflects the profound respect the Nizam held for the family of Abid and their ancestors. Reflecting on the honor, Raunaq Yar Khan expressed his deep sense of privilege in paying tributes to Hazrat Imam Hussain and the martyrs of Karbala, while acknowledging the timeless nature of their sacrifices within the historic residence.
