Before the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, the Uttar Pradesh government has made a significant announcement. Rinku Singh, an Indian cricket team's explosive batsman who recently returned home as an ICC T20 World Cup champion, is set to be appointed as a Regional Sports Officer. This move comes hand-in-hand with recognition for other athletes, including hockey player Rajkumar Pal and Paralympian Praveen Kumar, who are also to join prominent government roles such as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).

Policy for Athletes in Uttar Pradesh

The initiative is part of a larger policy through which the UP administration consistently honours athletes with exemplary performances. This year, six athletes will be conferred official appointment letters during a special ceremony organized at Lok Bhawan by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Rinku Singh's father passed away during his time as part of the ICC T20 World Cup-winning squad. However, he did not compromise on his commitment to Team India and stayed with the team until he finished the final rites of his father. Other recipients include Ajit Singh, a javelin thrower who will serve as District Panchayat Raj Officer, along with Simran, a 200-meter sprint bronze medalist. Additionally, Preetpal, a triple-sprint bronze medalist, will hold the position of Block Development Officer (BDO). Alongside these appointments and recognitions are cash awards totaling ₹1.64 crore under the Laxman Award and Rani Lakshmibai Award schemes, with further financial assistance worth ₹8.75 lakh allocated through the Eklavya Sports Fund.
