Amit Shah, Union Minister of Home Affairs, recently inaugurated new barracks for women border security personnel at the Sanchu border outpost in Bikaner, Rajasthan. This event marked a crucial recognition of the significant contributions of women to India's national security.
During his visit, Amit Shah highlighted that despite initial skepticism about women's role in border guarding, their contribution has surpassed expectations. Addressing the gathering, Shah said, "When we decided to adopt a gender-neutral approach and involve India's women, a debate arose regarding their suitability at the borders. Today, I can proudly say that women have contributed more than men in securing our national boundaries." He also shared plans to extend full benefits by 2030.
Significant Steps toward Gender Equality
The minister emphasized that 66 out of the 79 barracks for women personnel in Rajasthan have already been completed, and ongoing projects will be finished soon. Shah further stated that a Rs 200 crore project to erect 360 barracks in border areas under BSF surveillance is underway. Once this project concludes, it's expected to significantly enhance the operational comfort and efficiency of women officers stationed at borders.
Notably, the Centre decided in January 2016 to reserve 14-15 percent of posts for women at the Constable level across various border guarding forces. As of December 2025, recruitment figures show that 1680 women have joined in the financial year 2024-25.
This initiative not only promotes gender equality but also strengthens India's security apparatus. Home Minister Amit Shah, along with Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma of Rajasthan, visited Bikaner to address border security concerns and interacted with local authorities.
Shah's comments reflect a significant milestone in the realm of national defense, illustrating how policy shifts can transform traditional perceptions while enhancing overall security capabilities.
