New Delhi, August 2026 - Motorists embarking on journeys across national highways and expressways will soon face a financial hit. Starting April 1, 2027, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is expected to implement increased toll taxes for numerous routes, including the heavily traveled Delhi-Meerut Expressway. This hike could see a rise in travel costs by as much as forty percent, significantly impacting daily commuters and longer haul travelers alike.

Increase on Delhi-Meerut Expressway: The NHAI has confirmed a probable five percent increase in toll taxes for the Delhi-Meerut route. This hike will affect approximately twenty-five million vehicles annually, leading to an additional Rs 20 per trip, according to estimates.

Hikes on Other Key Routes: Besides the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, the NHAI has also indicated potential toll tax rises for several other national highways and expressways. These include the Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway, Tamil Nadu's East Coast Road, Madurai Ring Road, and even the Delhi-Mumbai route.

Impact of Increased Toll Taxes

The news comes as a significant setback to budget-conscious drivers. Daily commuters across these routes can anticipate increased financial burden, with some expenses doubling or tripling. For instance, travel on the Bharthana toll plaza — one of the busiest points on the Delhi-Mumbai route — may see rates increase by five percent, directly affecting thousands of daily travelers.

While exact details of the revised toll structures are not yet available, a spokesperson from NHAI advised motorists to expect upwards of a ten percent hike across multiple routes. These changes have been anticipated to boost revenue for highway maintenance and development but will undoubtedly cause concern among drivers navigating these vital transport links.
