The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the Southwest Monsoon is currently advancing across several regions of Maharashtra. With favorable atmospheric conditions, weather officials anticipate the arrival of the monsoon in additional areas, including Mumbai, over the forthcoming 48-hour period. This progression is a significant development as the seasonal rains move further into the Arabian Sea and across inland states.
Monsoon Progression and Rainfall Forecast
According to the latest briefing from the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), the Southwest Monsoon has already established its presence in parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, and Karnataka. Looking ahead, the IMD expects the current weather system to push deeper into Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Bihar within the next two days. The strengthening of westerly winds is set to trigger widespread rainfall, often accompanied by thunderstorm activity throughout Maharashtra.
The weather bureau has outlined specific alerts for various districts. The Konkan region is expected to experience heavy rainfall between June 22 and June 26. Simultaneously, Madhya Maharashtra is bracing for moderate to intense showers paired with gusty winds and lightning. The Marathwada region should also prepare for light to moderate precipitation along with intermittent thunderstorms through June 24.
Safety Advisories and Maritime Warnings
In light of the intensified Southwest Monsoon, the IMD has issued a formal warning for the maritime community. Fishermen operating along the South Maharashtra-Goa coast are strictly advised to refrain from entering the sea until June 26, as squally weather is anticipated with wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph, occasionally gusting up to 60 kmph. Rough sea conditions could pose significant risks to vessels and coastal activities.
Urban authorities, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), have alerted residents to the potential for localized flooding in low-lying areas. The intense rainfall may also disrupt transport services and damage standing crops in rural zones. Citizens are encouraged to remain vigilant, adhere to updated traffic advisories, and avoid proximity to unstable structures or water bodies during stormy weather. In the early hours of Monday, certain areas such as Bandra East already observed pre-monsoon showers, which provided a temporary reprieve from the heat while causing minor waterlogging and traffic congestion.
