Ramayana, the much-awaited adaptation starring Ranbir Kapoor and directed by Nitesh Tiwari, has ignited a fierce controversy on social media prior to its official rollout. The film's first glimpse was unveiled in Los Angeles (LA) weeks before it hit Indian screens, leading to a substantial backlash from fans.

Screening Controversy Rocks Social Media

The teaser screening for Ramayana at the auspicious Hanuman Janmotsav did not sit well with Indian movie-goers. The uproar erupted on social media, particularly on platform X (formerly Twitter), where users complained vehemently about the global premiere before the local launch.

One tweet stated, 'Do the filmmakers believe that the Indian audience holds less significance?' Another questioned the motives behind screening the teaser internationally first and raised concerns that the project was catering more to Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) than domestic audiences. These sentiments indicate a deep-seated belief among fans that the cultural epic should have been showcased nationally first.

Producer Namit Malhotra addressed the furor during an event in Mumbai, clarifying his intentions and defending the film's global rollout: 'Ram belongs to the whole world… We aim to take this magnificent epic to a global stage.' However, he acknowledged logistical challenges related to the shooting schedule that necessitated such an approach.

The backlash, however, did not deter Ranbir Kapoor from stealing the spotlight. His portrayal of Lord Ram—characterized by its simplicity—won hearts both domestically and internationally. While opinions on the matter remain mixed, the pre-teaser release has certainly generated a massive buzz surrounding the film.

The first part of the movie is scheduled for Diwali 2026, with Part 2 set for 2027. Nitesh Tiwari and his team are committed to crafting this project into the grandest cinematic experience in Indian cinema history.
