In a stunning performance that keeps the tennis world on its toes, Maja Chwalinska, ranked 114 in the world, continues her remarkable run at the French Open. The diminutive Pole secured her place in the semi-finals by defeating Anna Kalinskaya, currently the 22nd seed, in Wednesday's quarter-final matches.
Fighting Against Odds
Before her current streak at Roland Garros, Chwalinska had only claimed victory in two tour-level matches played on clay. However, she has managed to defy pre-tournament expectations and now finds herself just a match away from a historic breakthrough. On Wednesday, Chwalinska faced the formidable Kalinskaya and triumphed 7-6 (7/3), 6-3.
Chwalinska's victory was a testament to her resilience. She overcame two break points to serve out the first set at 5-1 and ultimately clinched it in a tie-break when Kalinskaya overcooked a backhand shot. The Pole went on to dominate the second set, breaking through with a double edge to secure an unassailable lead.
Chwalinska's journey is all the more remarkable considering her opponent's fighting spirit. Kalinskaya fought back from a 5-3 deficit in the first set and had two chances to put herself ahead but was broken twice by Chwalinska. Ultimately, she ran into the Pole's precision as Chwalinska sealed victory when Kalinskaya hit long off her forehand wing.
"I honestly don't know what's going on. I think every match here is of such a high level for me it feels crazy," Chwalinska expressed with humility, reflecting on her composure amidst the pressure.
The 24-year-old Polish player will now face either world number one Aryna Sabalenka or Diana Shnaider, currently ranked 25th. While the outcome remains uncertain, Chwalinska has already made history by equalling Nadia Podoroska's achievement from 2020, becoming the second women's qualifier to reach the semi-finals at Roland Garros in a professional era.
