Kerala Govt in Talks to Allow Public Screening of FIFA World Cup Games

The state government of Kerala is actively engaged in high-level discussions aimed at permitting the public screening of FIFA World Cup games throughout the region. Currently, the broadcast and digital live-streaming rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup within India are held by Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd and its streaming platform, ZEE5. Furthermore, the specific screening rights for Kerala were acquired by Eagles FC Kerala. The state government has explicitly distinguished between commercial screenings—often held by businesses and malls—and non-commercial viewings organized by local community groups that do not charge entry fees.

In response to these developments, the secretary of the state sports department has been directed to initiate formal talks with all relevant stakeholders. According to Minister O J Janeesh, these discussions have been quite positive, and there is a growing sense of optimism that a resolution will be reached shortly. Chief Minister V D Satheesan echoed this sentiment, confirming that the government is adopting a proactive and positive approach to facilitate these events while adhering to necessary regulatory permissions.
